| Board of Directors and Honorary Directors Officers President: Malcolm Poole (Scarborough) Malcolm is President of WH Shurtleff Company, one of Maine’s oldest distributors of water and waste water control materials. In addition to managing Shurtleff, Malcolm offers a Business Coaching and Consulting Service that focuses on small units and family businesses. He also holds a 50-ton Commercial Captain’s license and delivers vessels along the Atlantic Coast.
Vice President: Judith Fletcher Woodbury (Cumberland) Judy has been an attorney with Pierce Atwood LLP since 1991, concentrating in real estate law. A Leadership Gift Co-Chair for the Campaign for Justice, she raises funds from lawyers to help meet the need for civil legal services for low-income Maine residents. She has been sailing on Casco Bay all her life. Treasurer: Barry Sheff (Cumberland) Barry is a Senior Vice President with Woodard & Curran, an integrated engineering, science, and operations company headquartered in Portland. A professional engineeer, Barry's expertise centers around municipal infrastructure engineering, urban site development, land use and environmental permitting, and construction management. Clerk: Kathryn Reid (Portland) Kathryn is an attorney with Unum's Office of Business Practices and Ethics. She holds a private pilot certificate and enjoys kayaking on and swimming in Casco Bay. Directors Stan Bennett (Falmouth)
Stan is President and Chief Executive Officer of his family's business, Oakhurst Dairy. Over the years, Stan has been active with a number of environmental organizations. In the 1970's, he was active with "Citizens Who Care", a grass roots organization that preceded "Friends" in protecting Casco Bay. Later, he served as the President of the Gulf of Maine Aquarium Board. Today, Oakhurst Dairy is recognized as a leader in the Maine business community and the leader in the U. S. Dairy Processing Industry with regard to environmental and sustainability based practices. Sean Bergen (Yarmouth) Sean is Vice President of Sales and Purchasing with North Atlantic, Inc., a Portland-based seafood processor and importer. Raised on a small farm in Kennebunk, Sean's experiences on the water started very early, as he spent summers exploring the Maine coast with his family of six aboard their 30 foot sailboat. Jeff Clements (Concord, MA & Peaks Island) A co-founder of Friends of Casco Bay, Jeff is an attorney who has represented both private clients and the public interest in litigation and appeals in numerous state and federal courts since 1988. In addition to his litigation work, Clements served as policy planner in the Maine State Planning Office, helping to implement the non-point source provisions of the Clean Water Act. He formed Clements Law Office, LLC in 2009 after returning to private practice from the Office of Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley. Peter A. Dufour (Portland) Peter is a Director at Macdonald Page & Co., LLC, where he specializes in tax planning and compliance for businesses and individuals, with a focus on mergers and acquisitions of privately held companies. Peter firmly believes that economic development and environmental stewardship are not mutually exclusive, but rather must be coincident in order to build a better future for our children. John keeps watch on the health of Casco Bay from the deck of his home on Cousins Island or from the deck of his boat. Until his recent retirement, he served as Executive Vice President of TD Bank, heading its commercial lending area. Paul Gregory (Portland) Paul is an Environmental Specialist in the invasic species program of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. His expertise in public relations has benefited Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine Board of Pesticides Control, and now Friends of Casco Bay. Martin Grimnes (Brunswick) Martin is President of Harbor Technologies Inc., which he founded in 2003. Harbor Technologies focuses on manufacturing composite marine infrastructure products for commercial and residential markets.
Anne Henshaw (Brunswick) Anne is an anthropologist currently serving as Program Officer for Marine Conservation at the Oak Foundation. She enjoys strong ties with Casco Bay through four generations of family who have made this area their home.
Patricia Ianni (Falmouth)
Pat has been an environmental specialist for 25 years, working as a consultant in the fields of hazardous waste, regulatory compliance, and legal analysis. An attorney, Pat currently works for TD Bank as an environmental specialist in the risk management department. Bob Knecht (Freeport)
Bob is Principal/ Broker with Town and Shore Associates and has been a real estate broker for more than 21 years. A Maine Native, Bob grew up boating on Casco Bay, helped found the first USM sailing team, and has built a couple of boats. He got involved in the marine supply business fresh from college, launched an oyster farming operation in the Sheepscot River, and worked testing oil recovery systems on Casco Bay. When he and his wife Nan are not aboard their Beal's Island 22, they live in a home they built in South Freeport. Peter LeBourdais, DMD (Harpswell) Peter is a general dentist in Brunswick and a resident of Harpswell. A native of Brunswick, he spent summers on the New Meadows in Casco Bay. Peter is a director of the Maine Rowing Association and organizes the Quahog Bay Row Around, held each May.
Joan Benoit Samuelson (Freeport) Olympic athlete Joanie Benoit Samuelson is the founder and chair of the TD Bank Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race in Cape Elizabeth, her hometown. Many of us remember where we were in 1984 when Joanie entered the Olympic Stadium in Los Angeles to win the first Women's Olympic Marathon. She continues to set records and is an inspirational speaker and supporter and board member of many charities. Janet M. Sortor, PhD (Portland) Janet is Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs at Southern Maine Community College. Formerly an academic dean at Bunker Hill Community College, she has been a board member of various social service agencies in Massachusetts and Maine. Peter Van Alstine (Yarmouth)
Peter recently left Elmet Technologies as Vice President of Sales and Marketing, to embark on a year-long sailing adventure with his wife and two children.
Dr. John Wise (Cape Elizabeth) John is the Principal Investigator of the Wise Laboratory of Environmental and Genetic Toxicology, Professor of Toxicology and Molecular Epidemiology in the Department of Applied Medical Sciences at USM, and Director of the Maine Center for Toxicology and Environmental Health. Dr. Wise also holds appointments at several other research laboratories and aquaria throughout New England. He is especially noted for his pioneering work in marine cell culture studying the impact of toxic chemicals on the health and reproductive success of marine life, including whales, sea lions, fish, and sea turtles.
